Some scholars, especially representatives of the Anglo-American theological school, e.g. the late N. Glueck, have claimed that Tell Abu al-Kharaz is identical with the Biblical town of Jabesh Gilead. Jabesh Gilead is mentioned frequently in the Old Testament – in the books of Samuel, the Chronicles and Judges – amongst other events in connection with king Saul’s and king David’s battles against the Philistines and Ammonites which may correspond to 10 century BCE. Jabesh Gilead is also king Saul’s original burial place according to Samuel.
